Historical Description
LLANBRYNMAIR is an extensive parish in the hundred of Machynlleth, county of Montgomery, 17 miles north-west of Newtown, 10 ½ east from Machynlleth, with a station on the main line of the Cambrian railway. The parish is in Darowen sub-registration district, union and county-court district of Machynlleth rural deanery, Cyfeiliog and Mawddwy, archdeaconry of Merioneth, diocese of Bangor. The parish church of St. Mary, is believed to have been erected about the 5th or 6th century. It is built in the Early English style, and is surmounted by an immense belfry containing 3 very old bells. The transept was added soon after the Reformation to take the place of Talerddig chapel or chapel of ease, which existed in 1610. The registers date from the year 1663. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £223, gross income £238 and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1851 by the Rev. John William Kirkham M. A. of Jesus College, Oxford, surrogate and rural dean. The other places of worship are St. John’s church, a neat stone edifice built in 1867, and chapels for Baptists, Independents, Calvinistic and Wesleyan Methodists.
The area comprises 23,137 acres, of which 131 are water; the population in 1891 was 1,288.
