Historical Description

Buttington is a village and an ecclesiastical parish in the hundred of Pool, partly within the jurisdiction of the borough of Welshpool, in Forden union, Welshpool sub-registration and county-court district. It is situated 2 miles east-by-north from Welshpool. Some of the richest land in the county lies along the banks of the Severn in this parish. It is called by the Welsh, Tal-y-Bont (the head of the bridge), from a bridge crossing the Severn near it. Offa’s dyke passes through this parish, and here separates England from Wales. The church of All Saints’ is an edifice in the Early English style and provides sittings for 300 persons. The registers date from 1723. The living is a curacy, in the gift of the Vicar of Welshpool. Hope, Cletterwood and Trewern are townships in this parish. Rateable value, £6,441; population, 609.
