Historical Description

Strichen parish slopes gradually towards the banks of the river Ugie, which divides the parish. It is of an oblong shape, and contains 382 houses, and 1,520 inhabitants, viz. 657 males, and 863 females; of whom 543 were returned as being chiefly employed in agriculture, and 479 in trade and manufacture, principally that of linen yarn. The plantations and improvements of the late Lord Stricken have greatly changed the appearance of this quarter.
