Historical Description

The parish of FYVIE is situated on the banks of the Ythan, and is thirteen miles long and eight broad, containing 561 houses, and 2391 inhabitants, viz. 1091 males, and 1500 females, of whom 576 were returned as being chiefly employed in agriculture, and 138 in trade and manufacture. The surface of this parish is very uneven, and a considerable part is hilly and barren. Near the church, on the banks of the Ythan, are the ruins of a priory, supposed to have been founded by Fergus earl of Buchan, in the year 1179.
