Historical Description

THORNTON DALE is a parish, township and village on the main road between Scarborough and Pickering, with a station on the Scarborough and Pickering branch of the North Eastern railway, 16 miles south-west from Scarborough, 2 ½ east from Pickering, and 9 north from Malton, in the Whitby division of the Riding, wapentake of Pickering Lythe, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe West, Pickering union, Malton county court district, rural deanery of Malton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. Thornton Dale, Ellerburne and Farmanby have been formed into one parish for civil purposes. The two latter form the ecclesiastical parish of Ellerburne and will be found under that heading. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells: in the chancel is a recumbent effigy of stone generally taken to represent Catherine, wife of Sir Richard Cholmley kt. “the Black Knight of the North,” but the arms on the monument are those of the Hastings and St. Quinton families, the date of the monument is about 1320: the chancel retains a piscina, and there is a Norman font, and several monumental tablets to the Hill family (1773—1855) and to the Rev. J. B. Hill Webb, 53 years rector here, d. 1837, and to his wife. The east window, erected in 1855, is a memorial of Richard Hill esq., his first wife and his mother:-there is one to the Rev. Edward William Heslop, rector of this parish 1837—1899 erected 1899, and several other memorial windows and various modern brasses: the carved oak reredos was erected in 1893: in 1890 an addition was made to the church yard of a quarter of an acre of land, given by the late Rev. J. B. Hill. The registers date from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £360, including 284 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Richard Hill esq. and held since 1900 by the Rev. Godfrey Arthur Marshall M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel and school-rooms were erected in 1909 at a cost of about £3,000; there is also a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1891. The Thornton Institute, erected in 1897, at a cost of about £400, as a memorial to the late Rev. John Bichard Hill, of Thornton Hall, is a building of stone, containing reading, game and smoke rooms; there are about 100 members. There is an ancient cross in the centre of the village. A grant for a market was made in 1281. There are 12 almshouses (6 for Sinnington, 4 for Thornton, 1 for Ellerburne and 1 for Edstone), erected in 1656 by the Viscountess Lumley: the inmates receive from the Grammar school endowment £11 10s. and one ton of coals yearly to each inmate. About a quarter of a mile distant are the ruins of Roxby Castle, of which little more than the foundations remain. There are several stone quarries and limekilns in the neighbourhood. Thornton Hall, a large mansion situated in the centre of the village, and the property of Capt. Richard Hill J.P. lord of the manor and principal landowner, is at present (1913) unoccupied. The soil is gravel and limestone; the subsoil is rock and limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area of Thornton Dale with Ellerburne and Farmanby is 9,670 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £8,966; the population in 1911 was 1,181, and of Thornton Dale ecclesiastical parish, 762.
