Historical Description

SUTTON-UPON-DERWENT is a parish, township and long village, picturesquely seated in the vale of the navigable river Derwent, which is here crossed by a stone bridge of two arches; it is 7 miles west-by-south from Pocklington station on the York and Market Weighton section of the North Eastern railway and 8 east-south-east from York, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Wilton Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, Wilton Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells: the nave is divided from the aisles by an arcade of four Norman arches: there are three monumental slabs and an ancient brass: in the south aisle is a memorial window to the late Matthew Beal, of Woodhouse, erected by his trustees; and in the north aisle is another to the Rev. George Rudston Read M.A. rector of this parish from 1836: the church was repaired and a south porch erected in 1841, and in 1846 new stalls were placed in the chancel: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1593. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £420, including 196 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Viscount St. Vincent, and held since 1902 by the Rev. John Lloyd B.A. of Queens’ College, Cambridge Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The charities amount to £2 11s. 6d. yearly. On the bank of the river Derwent is a flour mill, and near it is a spring strongly impregnated with ferruginous matter. Viscount St. Vincent is lord of the manor and chief landowner, but the hamlet of Woodhouse belongs to the Crown. The soil is various; the subsoil is principally clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, turnips, potatoes and seeds, with a quantity of pasture and meadow land. The area of Sutton-upon-Derwent with Woodhouse is 3,661 acres of land, 9 of water and 13 of tidal water; rateable value, £3,691; the population in 1911 was 311.
