The church of St. Nicholas is a small building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, which until 1904 had pinnacles, but these have been blown down: it contains a clock and 3 bells: there are 340 sittings. The register dates from the year 1666. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £205, including 17 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Albert John Perkins B.A. of Downing College, Cambridge. The vicarage house was erected in 1895 on the site of the former one. This living was once held by Laurence Sterne, the author of “Tristram “Shandy, who baptised his daughter Lydia in the church. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1844, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1866. The poor have three cottages; and 17a. 0r. 6p. of land on West Moor: the latter is let for £12 5s. yearly: there is also the interest of £100 left by John Calvert in 1838, and two rent-charges amounting to 10s. In a field in North Skeugh is a large boulder of very hard cherty limestone, supposed by geologists to have been deposited here in the glacial age. Stillington Hall, the residence of Matthew Liddell esq. J.P. is a fine mansion, with well laid out grounds, standing in a delightful and well-wooded park of 100 acres. Leonard Jas. Tatham esq. of North Hill, Highgate, London, is lord of the manor, and Joseph H. Love esq. of Easingwold, and M. Liddell esq. are the principal landowners. The soil and subsoil are sandy and clayey. The chief crops are corn and potatoes, with excellent grazing land. The acreage is 2,157; rateable value, £2,921; the population in 1911 was 509.

Public Elementary school (mixed), erected in 1907 for 150 children; average attendance, 105.
