Historical Description

LIVERTON is a village, township and chapelry, 3 miles south-west from Easington and 1 ½ south from Loftus station. The township is governed by the Loftus Urban District Council. The church of St. Michael is a small and ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave, with a well-preserved Norman arch, of three orders, and a tower containing 2 bells, presented in 1903 when the church was thoroughly restored at a cost of £1,600, including an east window: there are two other stained windows: the old bells have been carefully preserved in the vestry: there are 100 sittings. The tithe, amounting to £200, net yearly value £133, and 35 acres of glebe, belong to the rector. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel at Liver-ton Mines. Viscount Downe K.C.V.O., C.B., C.I.E. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The area is 2,457 acres; rateable value, £6,978; the population in 1911 was 1,147, which is included in the Loftus Urban District.
