Historical Description

LITTLE OUSEBURN is a township, parish and village, 4 ¾ miles south-east from Boroughbridge, 8 ½ north-east from Knaresborough and 12 ½ north-west from York, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of Claro wapentake, union of Great Ouseburn, Knaresborough county court district, rural deanery of Borougbbridge, archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Ripon, The river Ouse runs through the parish. The church of the Holy Trinity is a very ancient stone building in the Early Norman and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave and aisles, with a square tower containing 2 bells; there are sittings for about 150: the font is modern. The register dates from the year 1560, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value about £250 with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev. Edward Henry Wathen Dickson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans have a small chapel here. The charities are £16 yearly. Sir Henry M. Meysey-Thompson bart. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 675 acres; of entire parish, 4,297 acres; rateable value, £1,738 18s. 4d.; the population of the township in 1871 was 319, of entire parish 568.

The Infant school was built by the late H. S. Thompson esq.; Miss Sarah Mahon, mistress.
