Historical Description

At Leckonfield, about three miles north from Beverley, was a celebrated mansion of the ancient Earls of Northumberland, which was taken down in the reign of James I.

LECONFIELD is a parish, township and village, on the road from Beverley to Driffield, 1 ¼ miles west from Arram station on the Hull and Bridlington section of the North Eastern railway and 2 ¾ north-west from Beverley, in the Holderness division of the Riding, Hunsley Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, North Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Beverley, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Catharine is a plain edifice of brick and stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a email western tower of brick, covered with ivy, and containing 2 bells: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1551. The living is a vicarage, united to the rectory of Scorborough, joint net yearly value £250, including 32 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Leconfield, and held since 1912 by the Rev, Francis Richard Wilberforce B.A, of Jesus College, Cambridge. A little south-west of the village is the site of an ancient castle, surrounded by a moat about half a mile in circumference. This place gives the title of baron to the Wyndham family. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is heavy loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area, including Arram, is 3,611 acres of land, 13 of water and 6 of tidal water; rateable value, £4,429; the population in 1911 was Leconfield and Arram, total, 325.
