    Historical Description

    OGBOURNE ST. GEORGE is a parish, on the Roman road and high road from Marlborough to Swindon, with a station on the Midland and South Western Junction railway, 4 miles north from Marlborough and 72 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Selkley, petty sessional division of Marlborough and Ramsbury, Marlborough union and county court district, rural deanery of Marlborough, archdeaconry of Wilts and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. George is a building of stone of the 13th century, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with quaint gurgoyles, containing 5 bells: there are two monumental brasses, one of which, of the 16th century, is to a member of the Goddard family: the east window is a memorial to William Henry Willes and his wife, and there is another to Thomas Gale esq.: the chancel was restored in 1873: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1664. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £166, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Robert Blythe, of the University of London. The Primitive Methodist chapel was built in 1852, and the Wesleyan chapel in 1864. The charities amount to £7 10s. yearly, derived from funded property. A priory of Benedictine monks was founded here in 1149: in the neighbourhood are several barrows: the surrounding downs, belonging to King’s College, Cambridge, have been to a great extent brought under cultivation. King’s College, Cambridge, who are lords of the manor, and John Henry Gale and Stephen Thomas Banning esqrs. are the chief landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, flint and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,585 acres; rateable value, £1,774; the population in 1891 was 461.
