Bolton Information

Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction:

Historical Description

BOLTON is a village and parish, 4 miles north-west from Appleby stations on the Midland and North Eastern railways, 9 south-east from Penrith stations on the London and North Western and Cockermouth and Keswick railways, 1 ½ north-east from Kirkby Thore station on the North Eastern railway, 3 east-north-east from the village of Morland, 9 north-east from Shap and 25 north-north-east from Kendal, in the Northern division of the county, West ward and union, Hackthorn petty sessional division, county court district of Appleby, rural deanery of Appleby and Kirkby Stephen, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The river Eden is crossed near the village by a stone bridge of two arches, built in 1870. The church of All Saints is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Late Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells, dated 1693: the south doorway is a fine example of Norman work: the east window is stained, and there are memorial windows in the chancel to the Rev. William Shepherd, of St. Bees, incumbent here 1834-81: the church affords 140 sittings. The register dates from the year 1665. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £195, with 82 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the vicar of Morland, and held since 1895 by the Rev. John Trail Suttie. of Trinity College, Glenalmond, and the University of Glasgow. The Free Churches Association Methodist chapel here was built in 1818. Charities:— There is a sum of about £1 4s. a year for church repairs.

Harrison’s charity, founded by will in 1864, the Poor’s stock and other benefactions provide about £13 yearly for distribution in money. Eden Grove is a modern mansion in the Elizabethan style, delightfully placed on a commanding eminence; from the terrace in front a magnificent view is obtained of the vale of Eden, backed by Cross Fell, and the long range of mountains extending far into Cumberland. Crossrigg Hall, about 2 miles west, is the residence of Hugh Carthew Rigg esq. J. P. and is pleasantly seated in a retired valley, surrounded with pleasure grounds and beautiful pastures, through which flows the Lyvennet rivulet. Bewley Castle, in the 13th century a residence of the bishops of Carlisle, and probably erected during the early part of the century, occupies a sequestered site in a valley about half a mile from the river Eden, and appears to derive its name from the de Buille or de Bush family, whose heiress at the beginning of the 13th century married Robert de Veteripont or Vipont, lord of Appleby: the buildings, now ruinous, consist of a long range lying north and south, and traceable to a distance of 80 feet, and at its southern end a transverse block or wing, 45 feet in length; the main portion is about 28 feet wide and has pointed arched doorways, but only fragments of the walls and two vaulted cellars now remain; the walls of the other portion, still extant, are two storeys in height, and retain on the east side a Decorated window probably belonging to the chapel, and on the south side is a trefoil-headed window with stone seats. The farm attached is now occupied by Mr. Chappelhow. The Earl of Lonsdale, who is lord of the manor, and William Graham esq. D. L., J. P. Hugh C. Bigg esq. J. P. Messrs. William and Joseph Dent, Robert Burra esq. of Gate, Sedbergh and Messrs. Matthew Farries and Christopher Stephenson are the chief landowners. The soil varies, being heavy land on the hills and a light good mould in the valleys, with a subsoil of clay. The principal crops are oats, turnips and potatoes. The area is 2,745 acres of land and 45 of water; rateable value, £3,371; the population in 1901 was 338.
