Historical Description

BINLEY, in Domesday “Bilveie” and “Bilnei,” is a parish and village, on the road from Coventry to Lutterworth, and bounded on the west by the river Sowe, 2 miles north-west from Brandon and Wolston station on the Rugby and Birmingham branch of the London and North Western Railway, 91 from London, and 3 east from Coventry, in the North-Eastern division of the county, Kirby division of Knightlow hundred, Coventry petty sessional division and county court district and Folestiill union The church of St. Bartholomew, formerly belonging to the priory of Coventry, is an elegant building of stone in the Classic style, erected by William, 6th Baron Craven, and consecrated in 1773; it consists of chancel, nave, north and west porches, and a tower containing a clock and 1 bell; the east window is stained, and there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a donative chapelry, net yearly value £105, in the gift of the Earl of Craven, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Thomas Jackson Seeker M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, who is also vicar of Wyken. The Rev. Thomas Wagstaff M.A. of New Inn Hall, Oxford, author of “A Defence of Charles I.” and long resident at Rome as chaplain to the Pretender, was born in this parish in 1645; he was for some time chancellor of Lichfield, and in 1693 was consecrated a bishop among the non-jurors: he died at Rome 17th October, 1712. The Earl of Craven is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil and subsoil are sandy. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 2,470 acres; rateable value, £1,784; the population in 1891 was 180.
