Bidford on Avon Information

Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction:

Historical Description

BIDFORD, in Domesday “Bedeford,” is a parish and village in a vale, 1 mile from Broom junction station, on the Midland and East and West junction railways, 7 south-west from Stratford-on-Avon and 4 south from Alcester, in the South-Western division of the county, Stratford division of Barlichway hundred, Alcester petty sessional division, anion and county court district, rural deanery of Alcester, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The parish, which contains the hamlet of Broom (or King’s Broom), with Barton and Marlcliff, is bounded on the north-west by the river Arrow, over which is a stone bridge to Salford Priors; on the south the river Avon passes close to the village, and is crossed by a bridge of 8 arches. Broom is on the east bank of the Arrow, and Barton and Marlcliff on the south of the Avon. Gas was introduced in 1869. The church of St. Lawrence, situated on an eminence, with a churchyard sloping down to the Avon, is a large edifice of stone, and consists of Early English chancel, nave, north and south porches, and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells; according to tradition there was formerly a north aisle; the church was almost entirely rebuilt of blue lias in 1835, and at the same time a stained east window inserted, and in 1865 a reredos was erected by subscription: there is a mural monument on the south side of the chancel to Woodchurch Clarke esq. 1647, and another with arms and a bust to Dorothy (Parker), first wife of Sir Fulwar Skipwith, bart. of Newbold Hall, A.D. 1655; the chancel, which contains a canopied piscina, was restored by subscription in 1886-7 at a cost of £767, and an oak pulpit erected in 1891 as a memorial to Agnes, wife of the Rev. Alfred Evans M.A. vicar, who died in 1884. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1664; marriages, 1665. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £3, gross yearly value £250, including 60 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Miss Lees, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Alfred Evans M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. At Broom there is a chapel of ease, opened in December, 1878, in which a Sunday afternoon service is conducted by the vicar of Bidford; it will seat 100 persons. At Bidford is a Wesleyan chapel. There are two charities, one from a bequest of lands by Alicia, Countess of Dudley, amounts to £68 yearly, and is distributed by a committee appointed by the parishioners, in clothing, food and fuel; the other realises annually £16, and was left by a Mr. Wilcox; there is also a sum of 5s. derived from land in the occupation of Mr. Sill, and 10s. yearly from land in Icknield street, which is distributed with the first named charity. Near the church is a large and antiquated house, traditionally known as the Falcon Inn, in which Shakespeare and his friends are said to have often held merry carousings. There exists an ancient brass mace of the 16th century, probably the official ensign of the constable of Bidford, it is of gilt brass, 7 inches in length, and consists of a banded shaft, with hemispherical head, and at the opposite end three perforated flanges of copper, and a flat button termination engraved with the initials I.T.: the mace head is divided by ornamental bands into four panels, enclosing respectively a fleur de lis, a portcullis, a Tudor rose, and the Royal cypher E R.: on the top is a plate originally having in relief a circular shield of the Royal arms, crowned, and supported by a lion and dragon, with a slipped Tudor rose below, but the shield itself has been destroyed. Bidford, although an ancient demesne of the Crown as early as the days of Edward the Confessor, was never incorporated; it at one time had a market, granted by Llewelyn, Prince of Wales, in the 4th Henry III. (1219-20), and recognised in the Elizabethan period, but it has long been discontinued, and the inhabitants now resort to the Evesham and Alcester markets. Fairs were also held here on April 9th and September 8th, but these have been superseded by monthly cattle sales, held at the White Lion hotel. The principal landowners are Sir Nicholas William George Throckmorton bart. D.L., J.P. of Buckland, Faringdon, Berks, James Sidebottom esq. J.P. of Millbrook, Hadfield, Manchester, the trustees of the Dudley Charity, James Milward esq. and James William Carlile esq. of Gayhurst, Newport Pagnell, Bucks, who is lord of the manor. The soil is various, sandy and stiff clay; subsoil, sand and marl. The chief crops are wheat, beans, turnips &c. The area is 3,500 acres; rateable value, £6,345; the population in 1891 was 1,461.

National School (mixed), built in 1872, at the total cost of £1,230, for 275 boys & girls; average attendance, 89 boys & 76 girls. The old premises are now appropriated to the infants’ school.

Infants’ School, average attendance, 80.
