    Historical Description

    WEST GRINSTEAD is a parish and village on the road to Worthing, and on the river Adur (which is navigable as far as Bine bridge), with a station 1 ½ miles north-east of the church, on the Shoreham and Horsham branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 6 ¾ miles south from Horsham, 8 ½ north from Steyning, 43 from London, in the North Western division of the county, rape of Bramber, West Grinstead hundred, Horsham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Storrington (third division), and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. George is an ancient building of stone and rubble, in the Early English and Decorated styles, and has a tower with spire, containing 6 bells: there are monuments to the Powlett, Burrell and Caryll families, and a few old brasses to the Halsham family, 1395—1441: the church was restored and partially re-seated in 1890—91 at a cost of £3,500, and has 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £480, with 98 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Leconfield, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Reginald Bridges Knatchbull-Hugessen B.A. of Balliol College, Oxford. The rectory house is Jacobean. The Catholic church, dedicated to our Lady of Consolation and St. Francis, is a building in the Gothic style of the 13th century. St. Dominic’s Priory, erected in 1860, has attached to it St. Joseph’s orphanage schools, and a home for poor, but respectable children. There is a Catholic cemetery, consecrated in 1866. The Cottage Convalescent Home, established in 1891 by Miss Montgomery, is available for about 12 patients. The kennel of the Crawley and Horsham fox hounds are close to West Grinstead station; Charles Bulkeley Goodman esq. of Cowfold, is the master. Horsham, Steyning and Worthing are convenient places for hunting visitors. West Grinstead Park is the residence of James Rolls Hoare esq.; the mansion is in the Tudor Gothic style: the park of about 300 acres is well wooded, and is surrounded with beautiful scenery. About half a mile from the station is Belmoredean House, the residence of John Mark Cazenove esq. The Rev. John Goring M.A. of Wiston Park, and Sir Charles Raymond Burrell bart. of Knepp Castle, Shipley, are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and tares. The area is 6,727 acres of land and 30 of water; rateable value, £7,348; the population in 1891 was 1,582.
