Historical Description

WEST CHILTINGTON is a parish, 3 miles east from Pulborough station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 9 east from Petworth and 12 south-west from Horsham, in the North Western division of the county, West Easwrith hundred, Arundel and Bramber rape, Thakeham union, Petworth petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Storrington (first division), archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone, chiefly of the Early English period, but incorporating work of reputed Saxon date with some Norman portions, and has a tower with spire, containing 4 bells: on the walls of the aisles are paintings of figures: the church was restored in 1882 at a cost of £800, and affords 180 sittings. The register of marriages and burials dates from 1558; baptisms, 1572. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £370, with residence and 12 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Andw. Caldecott M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. Smyth’s charity of £34 yearly provides £30 for educational purposes and £4 for distribution in money. The working men’s dub and reading room was erected in 1888. The Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. who is lord of the manor, Col. Chas. Gervaise Boxall, of Maidenhead, Berks, is the principal landowner. The soil is hazel mould and clay; subsoil, varied. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 4,064 acres; rateable value, £2,853; the population in 1891 was 620 in the civil and 612 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” Carlstone has been transferred from Thakeham to West Chiltington.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 11 Sep. 1879; T. Greenfield, clerk to the board.
