Historical Description

BRANTHAM is a parish, near the estuary of the navigable, river Stour, 1 ½ miles north, from Manningbree station on the main line of the Great Eastern railway and 9 south-west from Ipswich, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Samford, county court district of Ipswich, rural deanery of Samford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Michael is a rubble building in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: the church was thoroughly restored in 1869, and has 250 sittings. The earliest register begins July 27, 1634. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £317, with 22 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Herbert Robert Cole MA. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The principal landowners are Roger Kerrison esq. of Tattingstone Place, Capt. Edward Brett, of Wakes Colne, E. F. Quilter esq. the Rev. Canon Chas. Frederick Norwan MA. rector of Mistley, Manningtree, Charles Eley esq. of East Bergholt, and Lord Cranworth, of Letton Hall, Thetford, Norfolk. The soil is various; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,870 acres of land, 12 of water, 47 of tidal water and 582 of foreshore; rateable value, £18,565; the population in 1891 was 695.

National School (mixed), erected for 80 children; average attendance, 65.

A New Infants’ School to hold 80 children was erected in 1896 at Cattawade.
