Historical Description

BLORE, standing on an eminence above Dovedale, on the borders of Derbyshire, is a small village and parish, 7 miles north-east from Alton station on the Churnet Valley section of the North Staffordshire railway and 4 north-west from Ashbome, in the Leek division of the county, hundred of North Totmonslow, Leek petty sessional division, Ashbome union and county court district, rural deanery of Alstonfield, archdeaconry of Stoke-on-Trent and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Bartholomew, repaired in 1844—5, and further repaired in 1877, is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, with chapel on the north side, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with four crocketed pinnacles containing 3 bells: in the chapel is a canopied altar tomb of marble in the classic style, with recumbent alabaster effigies of a knight in armour and a lady, and on a slab above these another effigy in armour; at the heads of the two lower figures are two figures of females kneeling; the pillars and sides of the canopy are ornamented with heraldic shields and devices of these effigies, one of which represents William Bassett: there are also brasses of the 15th century to the Bassett family, including William Bassett, 1498, with effigies of himself and his wife Joan(Buryn)and a marginal inscription: a handsome screen of ancient woodwork and some of the original oak benches remain: the stained east window, erected in 1863, is a memorial to Mrs. Harrington Offley Shore: the south chancel window contains some fine ancient stained glass, representing St. Anne teaching the Virgin Mary to read: a new heating apparatus was put in in 1887 at a cost of about £30. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £91, net yearly value £125, including 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Haughton Charles Okeover esq. D.L., J.P. and held since 1875 by the Rev. John Young B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, who is also incumbent of the donative of Okeover. Blore Hall, now a farmhouse, was formerly the seat of the Bassetts. Haughton Charles Okeover esq. D.L., J.P. of Okeover Hall, who is lord of the manor, and the Rev. E. D. Boothman M.A. rector of Shelton, and Alfred Charles Duncombe esq. J.P. of Colwich Abbey, are the principal landowners. The soil is limestone; subsoil, clay. The land is principally used for dairy purposes. The area is 1,860 acres; rateable value, £2,399; the population in 1891 was 178.

National School (mixed), built in 1863, for about 50; average attendance, 21.

The school room is licensed for divine service.
