      Historical Description

COMPTON MARTIN is a parish and village on the north side of the Mendip Hills, on the road from Bath to Weston-super-Mare, 6 miles west from Clutton station on the North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 7 north from Wells and 11 south from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, Chewton hundred, Clutton union, Temple Cloud petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael is an edifice of stone, in various styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, north porch, aisles, and a fine western tower with balustrading and four pinnacles, and containing 6 bells: the vaulted roof of the chancel is a good example of Norman work, and is divided into two bays by a massive arch, and has bold groining ribs springing from each angle of the roof and intersecting in the centre: at the east end of the south aisle is a chapel, inclosed by a carved oak screen, formerly belonging to Bickfield nunnery: the east and west windows and three others are stained: the font is Norman: in the south aisle is a twisted column, beautifully carved and almost unique, and which many archaeologists, both of the United Kingdom and America, have specially examined: in 1901 the church was renovated throughout, and a new roof placed over the south aisle at a cost of about £1,690: there are sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £185, including 22 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1899 by the Rev. William Burland M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Rectory house is pleasantly situated adjoining the church. There are charities of £11 yearly value, derived from the rent of land situated in the parish of Blagdon, and distributed to, the poor yearly at Christmas. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1850 and seating 100 people. Bickfield farmhouse is surrounded by a moat, and is in the occupation of Mr. Mark Keedwell. The trustees of Lindsay Harry C. Shedden esq. (a minor), who are lords of the manor; Col. Sir Edward Stock Hill K.C.B., V.D. of Hazel manor, Ubley, and Charles Gathorne Hill esq. of Poole Court, Yate, Glos. are the principal landowners. The soil is red sand, resting on the mountain limestone. The chief crops are wheat, but most of the land is in pasture. The acreage is 2,614; rateable value, £3,472; the population in 1901 was 393 in the civil and 325 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 15,684, March 24, 1884, a detached part of Chewton Mendip parish, in Wells union, including Hazel farm, was added to this parish.

National School (mixed), built in 1842, for 80 children; average attendance, 55.
