Historical Description
WORTHEN, or Worthin, is a large parish and village, on the road from Shrewsbury to Montgomery and Newtown, 5 miles west from Minsterley station on the Shrewsbury and Minsterley branch of the London and North Western and Great Western joint railway, 12 ½ south-west from Shrewsbury, 9 north-east from Montgomery, and 11 east from Welshpool, in the Western division of the county, Chirbury and Ford hundreds, Welshpool county court district, Forden union, petty sessional division of Pontesbury, rural deanery of Montgomery, archdeaconry of Ludlow and diocese of Hereford. The river Rea flows through the parish. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone and brick, originally in the Decorated style, and consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, vestry, and a tower on the north side containing a clock and 6 bells: in the church is a monument to Dr. Daniel Pryce, dean of Hereford, rector of Worthen and chaplain to King Charles I. who died in 1631; the stained east window was added in 1891 at a cost of 200 guineas The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £837, gross yearly value £1,078, net £799, including 112 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of New College, Oxford, and held since 1874 by the Rev. Lancelot John Lee M. A. formerly fellow of that college, J. P. At Rowley is a chapel of ease, built in 1867, at a cost of £600: it is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of nave with eastern apse, south porch, vestry and a western turret containing one bell: the east window is stained. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. Fairs are held last Monday in March, May (hiring), June, September and November. There are charities of £30 17s. 8d. yearly value, distributed by the rector and two members of the Parish Council, on St. Thomas’ day. The Rev. Walter Charles Edward Kynaston M. A., J. P. of Hardwick Hall, Ellesmere, who is lord of the manors of Worthen and Brockton townships, Arthur Henry Orlando Lloyd esq. of Leaton Knolls, Shrewsbury, and James Whitaker esq. J. P. are the principal landowners. Hampton Hall, the seat of James Whitaker esq. J. P. which is about a mile westward, is a fine brick mansion of the 17th century, with freestone dressings and a handsome stone porch, and commands a splendid view of Stiperstones range, with Corndon and numerous other hills in the distance. The soil is mixed loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley &c. The area of the parish is 13,897 acres of land and 14 of water; rateable value, £12,273, including Hope, and the population in 1891 was 2,629 in the civil, and 1,116 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Worthen is a township in Chirbury hundred. The Rev. W. C. E. Kynaston M. A., J. P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The area is 983 acres.
National School, erected, with residence for mistress, in 1850, for 98 children, and a new class room to hold 30, has been added recently; average attendance, 90.
