Historical Description

OLDBURY is a township, village and parish, on the road from Bridgnorth to Cleobury Mortimer, 1 mile southwest from Bridgnorth station, on the Wellington and Craven Arms branch of the Great Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, Chelmarsh division of Stottesdon hundred, Bridgnorth union, petty sessional division and county court district, Bridgnorth rural deanery, Ludlow archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and a western turret containing one bell; and was restored in 1858 by the Rev. John Purton M. A. 49 years rector of this parish, who died 12 July, 1883, and to whose memory a carved oak pulpit, reading desk and choir seats were given in 1884 by his friends and parishioners and a carved oak eagle lectern by the Bishop and clergy of the diocese; there is also a memorial brass to him, against the south wall of the chancel; the east window and one other in the chancel and five in the nave are stained; there are sittings for 206 persons. The register dates from the year 1582. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £170, net yearly value £176, with 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1883 by the Rev. John Preston Wright M. A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. The interest of the sums of two £50, bequeathed to the parish by some persons unknown, and deposited in the Bridgnorth Savings Bank, are distributed at the discretion of the rector and churchwardens. The principal landowners are Lord Acton, lord of the manor, W. Fenton De Wend esq. Mrs. Gordon and Richard H. Boycott esq. The soil is a rich loam; the subsoil is clay. The land is chiefly pasture. The area is 808 acres; rateable value, £3,000; the population in 1891 was 272.
