Stamfordham Information

Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction:

Historical Description

Stamfordham, a pleasant well-built village, situated on the bank of the river Pont. The Church consists of three aisles, and a gallery at the west end; and in the north wall of the chancel, in a niche, is the effigy in stone of a Knight Templar, in the habit of his order, supposed to have been one of the Fenwicks, of Fenwick Tower. Here is a good free-school, founded and endowed by Sir Thomas Widdrington, in the year 1663.

A mile east from Stamfordham, on the south side of the Pont, is Cheesburn Grange, the manor of which formerly belonged to the priory of Hexham. It was the seat and estate of Gawen Swinburn, Esq. but has been since in the possession of the Riddels.

Topography of Great Britain, written: 1802-29 by George Alexander Cooke

STAMFORDHAM is a parish, measuring about 5 ½ miles from east to west, and 4 ½ from north to south, in the Hexham division of the county, north-east division of Tindale ward, Tynedale petty sessional division, Castle Ward union, county court district of Hexham, rural deanery of Corbridge, archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Newcastle. Stamfordham village is in the township of Heugh, 7 miles north-north-west from Wylam station on the Newcastle and Carlisle section of the North Eastern railway, 12 west-north-west from Newcastle, and 13 east-north-east from Hexham. It is pleasantly seated on rising ground, the river Pont skirting its southern boundary, and enjoys the advantages of an inexhaustible supply of fine pure water, from two overflowing pants or conduits, one being at the east and the other at its western extremity. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is an edifice of stone, in the Early English or First Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a tower containing 1 bell; in the chancel are mutilated effigies of two knights in armour and a priest, believed to represent members of the Fenwick family; the church, with the exception of the tower and the chancel arch and the south chancel wall, was entirely rebuilt in 1849, under the direction of Mr. Benjamin Ferrey, architect; there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £255, net yearly value £470, including 315 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Seymour Richard Coxe M.A. Of Brasenose College, Oxford. There are United Presbyterian and Wesleyan Chapels. There is a yearly rent-charge of £12, left for the poor of the parish, in the year 1698, by Mr. Henry Paston, which, in accordance with the will of the donor, is distributed by the vicar and churchwardens half-yearly; and there is also a charity realising £2 10s. yearly from a payment of wheat in the township of Nesbit, which is now commuted. Here is a subscription library of 400 volumes, supplied with books and newspapers. At the east end of the village is a small lockup for the temporary detention of prisoners. In the centre of the village stands the ancient Market Cross, a picturesque structure, supported on four open arches, and erected by Sir Edward Swinbourne bart in 1785. Fenwick Tower, the ancient seat of the Fenwicks, stood about one mile south-west; the existing fragment of the tower is now built into a farm house. In 1775 a stone coffer containing coins of Edward III. Richard II. and David II. of Scotland was found here. Fairs are held on the Thursday before the 26th of April, for horses, cattle and sheep; and on the Thursday before the 26th of August for cattle, sheep and lambs. Hirings take place the last Thursday in March for hinds; Thursday before the 12th of May, and Thursday before the 13th of November for unmarried servants. Term days-the 12th of May and 13th of November; and general fair first Thursday in October. The area of the entire parish is 15,916 acres. The population of the entire parish in 1891 was 825.

Endowed School, founded & endowed in 1663, by Sir Thomas Widdrington, & reorganised under a scheme given by Order in Council, June 29th, 1878; the present building was erected in 1879, & will hold 200 boys; average attendance, 74; the yearly income arising from the endowment is now £170, with house & garden for the master, & a small field in the village.
