Historical Description

Welford is a large village, situated on the banks of the Avon, and borders of Leicestershire; and, according to the late returns, consisted of 300 houses.

WELFORD is a large village and parish, on the high road from Northampton to Leicester, and on the river Avon, which here separates Northamptonshire from Leicestershire, 3 miles south-east from Welford station on the Rugby and Market Harborough section of the London and North Western railway, 14 north-north-west from Northampton, 8 south-west from Market Harborough, 8 south-east from Lutterworth and 12 north-east from Rugby, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Guilsborough, petty sessional division of Little Bowden, union of Market Harborough, county court district of Lutterworth, rural deanery of Haddon (first portion), archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. A branch of the Grand Union canal, now belonging to the Grand Junction Canal Co. passes through the lower part of the village, but is in, the county of Leicester. The village is supplied with water from springs. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, north and south, chantry chapels, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower, containing a clock and 5 bells: the south aisle retains a fine Decorated piscina: there are several stained windows, the east window, erected in 1868, being a memorial to Frederick Cox, surgeon: in the south chapel is another to the Rev. John Ferraby M.A. 24 years vicar, 1810—34, d. Nov. 4, 1834: there are a few tablets and an ancient marble monument, with brass effigies and inscription inverse, to Francis Saunders, ob, 1585, his three wives and nine children, and the allusive motto, “Franck et saine counseil:” in the south aisle is a brass, to Charles Hedley, for 18 years surgeon of this parish, d. 1st Sept. 1865; the marble reredos was erected in 1888 as a memorial to the Rev. George Ayliffe Poole M.A. 33 years vicar, 1843—76, and Susanna his wife; the communion table was presented in the same year by Lady Elizabeth (Ginkel) in memory of her husband, Lieut.-Col. the Hon. Frederick William Child Villiers, d. 23 May, 1871: the church was thoroughly restored in 1872, at a cost of about £3,000, as a memorial to the same, when the western gallery was removed, the north aisle rebuilt, a south porch added and the interior re-seated with open oak benches: a new burial ground of half an acre, in connection with the churchyard, has been added, and was consecrated by the Bishop of Peterborough, 27 April, 1894. The register, including Sulby, dates from the year 1562. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £223, including 78 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Peterborough, and held since 1890 by the Rev. George Thurston M.A. of Keble College, Oxon. About 27 acres of glebe land is now let out by allotments. The Congregational chapel was built in 1793, and in 1893 was renovated under the direction of Mr. E. Sharman, architect, of Wellingboro', at a total cost of £545: it affords 380 sittings: attached to the chapel is a Sunday school, built in 1867, at a cost of £400, and used as a lecture-room and for other purposes: there is also a library of about 400 volumes, open to the public on payment of 1s. per annum. Thirty acres of land are let in allotments, the rent of which is distributed to the poor on St. Thomas’ day; and about 20 acres in the lordship of Welford are vested in trustees for the benefit of the poor; Spencer Eystons and Whitechurch’s charities, amounting together to about £7 yearly, derived from money in the Funds, are for fuel and clothing. In this parish are situated the Hemploe Hills, on the summit of which stands Hemploe Hall, the property of Charles Henry Simpson esq. From these hills beautiful and very extensive views are obtained of the surrounding district of Northampton, Leicester and Warwickshire. The Earl of Normanton D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor, John Gee, Benjamin T. Biggs and C. H. Simpson esqrs. and the trustees of the late Thomas Orton esq. are the principal landowners. The land is arable and pasture. The soil is mixed, with good gravel and clay; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,063 acres; rateable value, £4,191; the population in 1891 was 882.

Welford & Sulby Endowed School, built in 1859, for 200 children; average attendance, 105; & supported in part by a small endowment of land, in the parish of Cold Ashby; there is a house for the master.
