Historical Description

BROUGHTON is a parish and large village, on the road from Kettering to Northampton, 2 ¾ miles south-west from Kettering station on the main line of the Midland railway, 7 north-west from Wellingborough and 11 north-north-east from Northampton, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Orlingbury, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Kettering, rural deanery of Rothwell (first portion), archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building of stone, in the Norman, Early Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, north and south porches and a south-west tower, with spire, containing a clock and 5 bells: the stone font is of Perpendicular date; the chancel was rebuilt in 1828: the church was thoroughly restored in 1854; the interior was fitted with open sittings in stained deal: oak stalls and a stained window were placed in the chancel. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £160, including 300 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Buccleuch K.G., K.T. and held since 1895 by the Rev. William MacManus M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a Union Dissenting chapel, erected in 1869 at a cost of £300. There are charities producing £69 yearly for distribution, derived from grants of land and gifts of money, left by various benefactors from the year 1675. The Church estate of 18 acres affords about £29 yearly for church purposes. The Duke of Buocleuch K.G., K.T. who is lord of the manor, Lord Wantage V.C., K.C.B., Mrs. William Shatford, and the rector are the chief landowners. Part of the soil is of a stiff clayey nature; part of the subsoil, ironstone. The chief crops, are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,742 acres; rateable value, £3,343; the population in 1891 was 978.
