Historical Description

ERPINGHAM is a parish and village (from whence the name of this and adjoining hundred was derived), 3 ½ miles north from Aylsham station on the East Norfolk branch of the Great Eastern railway, 2 ½ north from Aylsham Town station on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway and 7 west from North Walsham, in the Northern division of the county. South Erpingham petty sessional division, Aylsham union and county court district, rural deanery of Ingworth and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a noble pile of stone and flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north and south porches and a western tower containing 4 bells: the church was new roofed in 1842, and renewed at the cost of the late Dowager Lady Suffield: an organ was erected in 1879: there are 275 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of Blickling, average tithe rent-charge £649, joint net yearly value £284, including 32 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Constance, Marchioness of Lothian, and held since 1868 by the Rev. Frederick Meyrick M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford and canon and prebendary of Lincoln Cathedral, who resides at Blickling: the Rev. William Edwards, of St. Bees, has been curate in charge since 1893. There is a Reformed Methodist chapel. Part of the parish is in the Earl of Orford’s manor; the remainder was formerly held by a family of its own name, one of whom was Sir Thomas de Erpingham K.G. a chivalrous knight who accompanied John, Duke of Lancaster, throughout the Spanish wars of 1399, and those of Henry IV. and V. and is frequently mentioned by Shakespeare in Henry V. (Act iv. Scene 1) as one of the English leaders at Agincourt; he was also a large benefactor to Norwich, and erected there, about 1420, the gateway standing immediately before the west front of the cathedral, upon which his arms and those of his two wives are carved, together with the word “thank,” on scrolls. Constance, Marchioness of Lothian, who is lady of the manor. Sir Kenneth Hagar Kemp bart. of Mergate Hall, Robert Shepheard esq. Frederick D. Ives esq. of Itteringham and A. C. Woolsey esq. are the principal landowners; there are also a few small holders. The soil is loam; subsoil, red sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats and hay. The area is 400 acres; rateable value £1,940; the population in 1891 was 383.
