Historical Description

WIGTOFT is a parish, 2 miles north-west from Algarkirk station on the East Lincolnshire section of the Great Northern railway, 3 south-east-by-south from Swineshead and 7 south-west-by-south from Boston, in the Holland division of the county, parts of Holland, in Kirton wapentake, petty sessional division of Kirton and Skirbeck, Boston union and county court district, rural deanery of North Holland No. 1, archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient building of stone, in the Norman, Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with small spire, containing 5 bells and a clock: the oldest portion of this, church is a richly ornamented Late Norman window in the western face of the tower: the porch exhibits portions of Norman and later work: the nave and aisles belong to the first half of the 14th century: the lower part of the tower is Early English, but the upper stage and angle turret are Perpendicular, and to this period also belong the chancel and clerestory: portions of a lofty Perpendicular rood screen exist, as well as the entrance to the rood loft, and there is a good Jacobean pulpit: in the south aisle is a piscina, and an aumbry and some fragments of old glass, including a quartered shield of France and England, two dragons and a lion’s head, jessant de lis, remain in the windows: in the chancel are two chairs, partially constructed from old carved bench ends: the church was thoroughly restored in 1891—2 at a cost of £1,051, open seats being substituted for the old pews: during the restoration a beautiful canopied tomb was discovered in the south wall of the south aisle: the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1618. There formerly existed here a very valuable book of churchwardens accounts, relating to this church, 1484—1631, the contents of which, previous to its loss, were printed in Mr. John Nicholls' “Antient Manners in England,” published in 1797, pp-77—87; 195—230. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £252, including 139 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Lincoln, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Joseph Heath MA. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, rural dean of Holland No. 1, and J.P. Lincs. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1862. At Hoffleet Stow, in this parish, is the brewery of Mr. William Sharpe. There are several charities connected with this parish, amounting to £50, the most important being the Blisbury gift; the whole sum is distributed at Easter and Christmas in money. The principal landowners are Earl Brownlow P.C. lord lieut. John William Ingram esq. of Onslow gardens, London, John Harrison Brown, of the Fen Houses, Mrs. Hargreaves, Mr. Francis Cocks, of Tower street, Boston, Paul Speak esq. of Bradford, Mrs. Jane Hides, of Asperton, Wigtoft, Capt. William Craufurd Hurrell, of Burgh-in-the-Marsh, Mr. J. W. Barton, of Lombard street. London, and Miss Barton, of Spilsby road, Boston, and there are many small freeholders. The soil is loam; subsoil, loam and clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, potatoes, celery, with a great portion of rich pasture land The area is 3,444 acres; rateable value, £4,395; the population in 1891 was 653.

The portion of the Fen allotted to this parish at the Inclosure is 7 miles north from the church.

This parish was made contributory to Kirton School Board, September 9, 1879, electing 1 member.

Free School (mixed), founded in 1835 & endowed with £33 yearly, called the Blisbury charity; there are now 90 scholars.
