Historical Description

KETTLETHORPE is a parish, pleasantly situated on the west side of the Foss Dyke navigation, over which there is a ferry for passengers and vehicles, and which divides this parish from Hardwick township: it is 3 ½ miles west from Saxilby station on the Spalding and Doncaster section of the Great Northern and Great Eastern joint railway, 9 ½ west-north-west from Lincoln and 10 south from Gainsborough, in the West Lindsey division of the county, Well wapentake, Lincoln (Lindsey) petty sessional division, parts of Lindsey, Gainsborough union and county court district, rural deanery of Lawress No. 2, archdeaconry of Stow and diocese of Lincoln. Kettlethorpe proper, where the church stands, is a very picturesque part of the parish, flanked by plantations, and has fine avenues of old timber and several charming walks. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is of white brick, rebuilt 1840—5 in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave and an ancient embattled western stone tower containing 3 bells: the upper portion of the tower is Perpendicular: the stained east window was inserted in 1874, in memory of the Rev. George James Atkinson, rector from 1836: there are two other memorial windows, and several mural tablets, one of which, in the east wall of the chancel to John Becke, priest, is dated 1597: there are 250 sittings. The register including Fenton, dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value from 311 acres of glebe £280, with residence, in the gift of Major F. A. Cracroft-Amcotts, and held since 1893 by the Rev. James Bell MA. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The charities amount to £23 yearly, derived from 5 a 3r. 23p. of land, allotted at the Inclosure in lieu of land left by William Becke, priest, in 1597, £7 from Hail’d charity and 13s. 6d. interest of £20 left by Mrs. Leake in 1723. Major Frederick Augustus Cracroft-Amcotts, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, clay and sand. Th chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and pasture, and there is much woodland. The area of the township is 2,158 acres of land, 6 of water and 34 of tidal water; rateable value, £1,696; the population of the township in 1891 was 196.

Church of England Sunday, built in 1854, at the expense of the late Colonel Amcotts, for 40 children, with average attendance, 36; & supported by Major F. A. Cracroft-Amcotts; superintended by the rector.
