Historical Description

GREAT HARWOOD is a town, 5 miles north-east from Blackburn and 4 north-west from Accrington, with a station, opened in 1878, on the Blackburn to Burnley section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, and was formed in 1837 into a parish from the old parish of St. Marys, Blackburn, in the Darwen division of the county, Blackburn petty sessional division, Blackburn parish, hundred (lower division), union and county court district, Blackburn rural deanery and archdeaconry and diocese of Manchester; the town is well paved and lighted by the Accrington District Gas and Water Board. A Local Board of Health of 12 members was appointed in 1863. but, under the “Local Government Act, 1894,” the town is now governed by an Urban District Council. The church of St. Bartholomew iff an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, organ chamber, vestry and a western tower containing one bell; the church was enlarged in 1881. at a cost of £1,962, and reopened 10th November, in that year: there are 460 sittings. The register dates from the year 1579, and is in perfect condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300. with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Blackburn, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Arthur Frederick Johnson M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, and surrogate, St. John’s iron church, St. Hubert’s road, built in 1898, is a branch of the parish church, and will seat about 800. There is a Congregational chapel erected in 1841, also Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Free Methodist chapels. The Baptist, known as the Great Harwood James Barlow Chapel,” was erected in 1903 at a cost of £1,150. The Catholic church, erected, in 1859, at a cost of £11,000, the gift of the late James Lomax esq. of Clayton Hall, and dedicated in honour of Our Lady and St. Hubert, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, lady-chapel and a tower with spire together 126 feet high: the windows are filled with stained glass, some being memorials to the Lomax and Walmesley families: a handsome Gothic cross was erected September 2, 1888, in the churchyard to the memory of the late Very Rev. Canon Dunderdale for 30 years rector, who died October 2, 1887: there are sittings for 360 persons: adjoining the church is the presbytery. The Town Hall is an edifice of stone, erected in 1900, from designs by Messrs. Briggs and Wolstenholme, architects, of Blackburn. The Clock Tower, in Towngate, was erected in 1903 as a memorial to John Mercer F.R.S., F.G.S. the inventor of the process of “mercerisation,” as applied to cotton and other fabrics. There are cotton mills in the township and collieries in the neighbourhood. The Great Harwood Agricultural Society, established in 1857, holds its meetings here annually on Whit Tuesday, when prizes are given to the aggregate value of from £400 to £500: an annual fair is also held here 21st August. The charities amount to £80 yearly, the greater part of which is applied to educational purposes, and the remainder distributed to the poor. Alsprings is the residence of Nathan Smith esq. Mrs. H. Trapped-Lomax, of Clayton Hall, and Mrs. H. M. M. Howell, of Penzance, are ladies of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is gravel; subsoil, clay and gravel. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area of the civil parish and Urban District is 2,868 acres, of which 68 are water; rateable value, £14,516; the population in 1891 was 9,073 and in 1901, 12,015.
