Historical Description

MANSELL LACY is a parish and village on the Hereford and Kington road and in a sheltered valley between the wooded heights belonging to the Foxley domain, 2 ½ miles east-by-south from Moorhampton station on the Hereford, Hay and Brecon section of the Midland railway, 7 north-west from Hereford, 5 ½ south-east from Weobley and 12 southeast from Kington, in the Northern division of the county, Grimsworth hundred, Hereford county court district, Weobley union and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Weobley (1st division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Michael is an ancient and interesting building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, clerestories nave, south aisle, south porch and a western tower containing a clock and 4 bells: the church was restored and repaired in 1860, at a cost of £549, and a stained window placed in the chancel: an organ chamber was built in 1879. The register dates from the year 1714. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Yazor, tithe rent-charge £91, joint yearly value, including 3 ½ acres of glebe, £337, in the gift of the Rev. George Horatio Davenport M.A. lord of the manor and a principal landowner, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Henry Cockayne M.A. of University College, Oxford. Guy’s Hospital are also landowners here. The soil is loamy and gravel; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and peas. The area is 1,316 acres; rateable value, £1,802; the population in 1891 was 195.

Bunshill, formerly a detached portion of Mansell Lacy, was, March 25, 1884, transferred to Bishopstone; the property belongs to Guy’s Hospital: it extends from Ken Chester, crossing the Brecon and Hereford roads, to the river Wye.

National School (mixed), with residence for the master, built about 1855, for 160 children; average attendance, 55.
