Historical Description

FARLINGTON is a parish on Langston Harbour, and on the road from Havant to Fareham, 2 miles west from Havant station, on the London and South Western and London, Brighton and South Coast railways, 6 north-east from Portsmouth and 68 from London, in the Southern division of the county, Portsdown hundred, Havant union, Fareham petty sessional division, Portsmouth county court district, and in the rural deanery of Landport, and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester. The parish includes the villages of Purbrook, Portsdown, Stakes and part of Waterloo on the north side of Portsdown Hill, and the hamlet of Drayton, 1 mile west, on the south. The church of St. Andrew is a handsome structure of flint, with stone dressings, in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and small western belfry surmounted by low spire containing 2 bells; there is a piscina of the 12th century: the chancel was rebuilt in 1872 from a design by the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. and the remainder of the church was completed in 1874—5, under the same architect, who also furnished the designs for the windows, which are all stained as memorials to relatives of the rectors and of others connected with the parish, and the entire cost of rebuilding was about £4,000: there are 110 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, with residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1887 by the Rev. Arthur James Richards M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, and J.P. Farington Redoubt, in this parish, mounts several guns. Here also are waterworks and reservoirs in conjunction with Havant, for supplying the forts on Portsdown and the towns of Portsmouth, Portsea and Southsea. William Henry Deverell esq. of Bossington House, Stockbridge, who is lord of the manor, the Portsmouth Water Co. Messrs. Edward and Gladston Clarke, the War Office and Thomas Thistlethwayte esq. of Southwick Park, Fareham, are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, flint and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 2,389 acres of land, 10 of water, 56 of tidal water and 535 of foreshore; rateable value, £10,059; the population in of the civil parish in 1891, including Purbrook and Stakes, was 1,352, and part of Portsdown, and of the ecclesiastical, 974.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Nov, 27,1875, for the united district of Farlington & Waterloo; H. E. Sly, of Waterlooville, clerk to the board; the school, which has lately (1898) been considerably enlarged, is in the Stakes Hill road, Waterlooville.
