Historical Description

WILLERSEY, a village and parish, on the Worcestershire border, and on the road from Stratford-on-Avon to Winchcomb, is 3 ½ miles south from Honeybourne station on the Great Western railway, 26 north-east from Gloucester, 6 ½ south-east from Evesham, and 4 west from Campden, in the Eastern division of the county, Kiftsgate hundred, Evesham union and county court district, Campden petty sessional division, and in the rural deanery of Campden, archdeaconry of Cirencester and diocese of Gloucester. The church of St. Peter is a cruciform building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and an embattled central tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the communion plate includes a chalice dated 1576, a paten dated 1666, and a pewter flagon dating from about 1660; the communion cloth has the date 1664 woven into it: the ancient font, supposed to date from the 13th century, is preserved, though not now in use: there are some remains of 13th or 14th century stained glass: the church was new roofed, restored and reseated in 1868, and again in 1878—82 at a cost of £506, and affords 250 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1721; marriages, 1754; burials, 1727. The living is a rectory, yearly value £275, with residence, in the gift of E. Gibbon esq. of Gateacre, Liverpool, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Oldfeld Bartlett MA. of Exeter College, Oxford. There is a charge by will, of £8, on a farm here, paid annually to descendants of the Pendrell family, who harboured Charles II. when a fugitive from the battle of Worcester, Sept. 3, 1651, and another charge of £10 on another farm, paid annually to the poor of Shipston-on-Stour: the interest of £200, bequeathed by the Hon. Miss Rushout, is also distributed in blankets to the poor of Willersey at Christmas, and a charity of £2 2s. yearly value is distributed to the poor yearly. The principal landowners are Robert Newton Chadwick esq. of Farncombe, Broadway, Worcester, the Right Hon. the Earl of Harrowby P.C. and Sir Francis Salwey Winnington bart. of Stanford Court, Worcester, who is lord of the manor; James Roberts-West esq. of Alscot Park, Preston-on-Stour, is also a landowner. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, pasture and beans. The area of the parish is 1,177 acres; rateable value, £1,793; the population in 1893 was 353.

National School (mixed), built, with residence for the mistress, in 1844, by the late Earl of Harrowby, & enlarged & remodelled in 1896, at a cost of £260, for 59 children; average attendance, 58.
