Historical Description

CAM is a parish and village with a station on the Dursley branch of the Midland railway, 1 mile north from Dursley, 13 south from Gloucester and 109 from London, in the Mid division of the county, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Dursley, Berkeley hundred, rural deanery of Dursley and archdeaconry and diocese of Gloucester. The church of St. George is an ancient building of stone in the Late Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 5 bells: there is a stained window to the memory of Thomas Morse esq.; the east window was given by the Misses Rhodes: a new organ was provided in 1888, at a cost of £300: there are sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1569. The living of Cam is a vicarage, net yearly value £205, including 8 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Gloucester, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Francis Thorpe Penley MA. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge.
