Historical Description

BUCKLAND FILLEIGH is a parish, 8 miles north-west from Dunsland Cross railway station on the Holsworthy branch of the London and South Western railway and 7 north-west from Hatherleigh, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Shebbear, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Torrington, and in the rural deanery of Torrington, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 4 bells, all cast by John Pennington and Sons in 1772; weight of tenor, 7 cwt. 2 qrs.: the north aisle was formerly a private chapel attached to Buckland House, and was dedicated to All Saints’: there are several monuments to the Fortescue family, dated 1622, 1669, 1775 and 1845: in 1885 Lords Clermont and Carlingford, both members of the Fortescue family, presented stained windows to the church: the brass lectern was also given by the late Lord Clermont (d. 1887): there are three memorial windows to William Browne esq. who died in the Soudan campaign, one erected by his comrades of 16th Lancers, another by the Captains Burn, 1st Royal Dragoons and 21st Hussars, and a third by the rector and his friends, besides others: an American organ was presented in 1882 by William James Browne esq. lord of the manor: the church was restored in 1887 at a cost of £800, the floor re-laid, the oak roof opened, the interior reseated with oak benches, incorporating the old work, and a vestry erected, the expense being defrayed by William Jamas Browne esq. as a memorial to his son: there are 91 sittings. The register dates from the year 1622. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £145, including 87 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1875 by the Rev. John Robert Powell M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford, chaplain to the Earl of Halsbury, and surrogate. A small charity, the interest of £10, left by the Rev. William Walter, a former rector, is given to the poor yearly. Mrs. Vallance, the present tenant of Bradlegh, has in her possession a finely carved oak bedstead, date 1605. Arthur Scott Browne esq. who is lord of the manor, Lord Clinton, John Reddaway esq. of Curworthy House, Inwardleigh, and the rector are the chief landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, stone. The crops are oats. The area is 3,on acres; rateable value, £1,846; the population in 1901 was 183.
