Historical Description

IRTHINGTON is a township and parish to the north of the river Irthing, 3 miles west-by-north from Brampton station on the North Eastern railway, in the Northern division of the county, Eskdale ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Brampton, and in the rural deanery of Brampton and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Kentigern is a building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, west porch, and a turret containing one bell, hung at the close of the last century in the place of two old bells: a fine Norman arch divides the nave and chancel, and across it is a screen: there are inscribed tablets to the Rev. John Stamper, 50 years vicar here, d. 1811, and to Mr. Robert Bell, of the Nook, d 1876, to whose memory also the stained east window was erected: there are other memorial windows to the Rev. John Topping, vicar from 1811, d. 18 April, 1847; to John Lamb Waugh, d. 8 Nov. 1851; to Miss Dobbie, killed at, Opunake, New Zealand; to Charlotte Sophia Dacre, d. 1872, and two others, one of which was presented by the Rev. Thomas Dodgson M.A. now curate of Saxelby, Leicester, in memory of his brother, who died in 1845: the pulpit and font are both of stone, richly carved: the nave and aisles were restored in 1849, and the chancel in 1853, under the direction of the Rev. J. F. Lee of Lancaster, assisted by Mr. Bloxam, architect, of Rugby. The church affords 300 sittings. In the churchyard is a tombstone inscribed to Robert Bowman of Irthington, d. 1823, aged 119. The registers date from the year 1704. The living is a vicarage; rent charges £9; gross yearly value about £400, with about 370 acres of land, in the gift of and held since 1852 by the Rev. William Dacre M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge.

Charities.-Hetherington's, Dalton’s, Mulcaster's, Boustead’s and Sarjinson’s charities, consisting of money invested in stock and railway securities, produce together £20 11s. 4d. yearly, which is applied to educational purposes, with the exception of Mulcaster’s, which is to be divided amongst the poor of his native village on the 24th Dec. annually.

The Nook-formerly the Manor House-is now (1897) the residence and property of Henry Clough esq. Beanlands Park, the property and residence of Robert Gibbon Graham esq. J.P. is a pleasant residence overlooking the river Irthing, and commanding a beautiful and extensive view towards the south. The remains of a Roman fort or mile-castle were discovered about 1843 near to the Nook by the late Mr. Robert Bell, who also collected a number of ancient coins. A quantity of ancient Roman and other coins have been found in the neighbourhood, in the vicinity of the Roman wall and vallum, which run parallel to each other through the parish about half a mile north-west of the village of Irthington through the hamlet of Old Wall. The Earl of Carlisle and George John Johnson esq of Castlesteads, Walton, who are lords of the manor, Miss Bell of Beanlands, and Mr. Robert Gibbon Graham are the chief landowners. The soil is in some places sandy, and in others a black loam; the latter requires much improvement. The principal crops grown here are oats, barley, and turnips-the last being largely grown. The area is 7,156 acres; rateable value, £8,103. The population in 1891 was 764, including the townships.

A School Board of 5 members was formed here 30 Jan. 1874; Rev. William Dacre, clerk to the board & chairman; John Irving, attendance officer, Newtown.
