Historical Description

TILSTON is a parish, township and village, 3 miles north-west from Malpas, 3 south-west from Broxton station on the Whitchurch and Chester section of the London and North Western railway and 12 couth-by-east from Chester, in the Eddisbury division of the county, higher division of Broxton hundred and petty sessional division, Tarvin union, Chester county court district, rural deanery of Malpas and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The church of St. Mary, rebuilt in 1875, is an edifice of red sandstone, consisting of chancel, nave, Stretton chapel on the north side, organ chamber end an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 4 bells: the stained east window was presented in 1889 and a stained west window in 1895 by Lord Stanley of Alderley: in the church is a memorial to James Richardson, nearly 54 years rector of this parish, d. 20 Sept. 1773, and to Elizabeth his wife, d. 19 Feb. 1776; and there are others to Margaret, wife of Major John Leche, d. 7 Jan. 1866; to Major John Leche, d. 2 April, 1815, and to Edward Wright, of Stretton, d. 1659: the church affords 240 sittings. The registers date from 1558 and include a list of rectors from 1301 up to the present time. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £203, gross yearly value £283, with 37 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate gift of the Marquess of Cholmondeley and T. W. Tyrwhitt-Drake esq. and held since 1885 by the Rev. Morris Jones B.A. of St. Davids College, Lampeter. Here are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The charities for distribution amount to about £11 yearly. John Hurleston Leche esq. of Carden Park, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat and oats and some pasture land. The area of the township is 799 acres; rateable value, £1,565; the population in 1891 was, of the, parish 651, township 305.

Parochial School (mixed), built in 1872, for 150 children; average attendance, 63; & endowed with £10 yearly from. Bradshaw’s & Fitton’s charities & £6, being the interest; of £150 held in trust by J. H. Leche esq.
