    Historical Description

    WOUGHTON-ON-THE-GREEN is a parish and village built around a large green of 20 acres, 2 miles north from Fenny Stratford station on the Bletchley and Bedford line of the London and North Western railway, 4 miles south from Newport Pagnell, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Newport Pagnell, rural deanery of Bletchley, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. The river Ousel and the Grand Junction canal pass through this parish. The parish is supplied with water from Great Brickhill by the Fenny Stratford Water Works. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 4 bells: the ancient rood-loft stairs remain within the wall: the church was restored iff 1867, the cost of the restoration of the chancel being defrayed by the Rev. Maurice Farrell M.A. rector 1855—84, the remaining cost, amounting to about £600, was raised partly by subscription and partly by a rate: in 1891 the church was again restored under the direction of Mr. J. Oldrid Scott, architect, the chancel at the expense of the rector, who also gave the pulpit and font cover (at a total cost of about £755): a new organ and organ-chamber were erected as a memorial to the late Major William Levi (d. 1889) by his widow and his son, William John Levi esq. of Woughton house, at a cost of about £1,250; and the nave was restored by subscription, amounting to about £540; in 1896 a chancel screen was erected by the rector from designs by Mr. J. Oldrid Scott F.S.A.: there are about 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £115, derived from 207 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of H. C. B. Bowles esq. and held since 1884 by the Rev. Frederick Francis Field B.A. of St. Johns College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1867. There is a charity of about £18 derived from 14 acres for the repair of the church and the relief of the poor and £2 3s. fuel money. Woughton House, the residence of Mrs. Levi and Capt. William John Levi J.P. is a handsome mansion of brick, pleasantly seated near the church in a park of 43 acres. The Rev. F. F. Field B.A. who is lord of the manor, Henry Carington Bowles Bowles esq. of Myddelton house, Enfield, Middlesex, Capt. W. J. Levi, Charles William Prescott-Westcar esq. of Strode Park, Heme, Kent, and William Whitworth esq. of Ouse Manor, Sharnbrook, Beds, are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are pasture, wheat, beans and barley. The area is 1,216 acres of land and 8 of water; assessable value, £2,868; the population in 1891 was 208.

    A School Board for the united district of Woughton & Sympson was formed 19 Jan. 1875; F. Bodley, Sympson, clerk to the board; the school is between the two villages.
